Robert Q. Hoang, MD is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His urologic surgery training took place at affiliated hospitals of the world-renowned Texas Medical Center, including urologic oncology residency training at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

He was also fortunate to have been trained under the auspices of recognized physicians such as Dr. Joseph N. Corriere who served 10 years as the Director of Education of the American Urological Association (AUA) and as President of the AUA from 2005-2006, Dr. Edward J. McGuire who is an international authority in the field of female urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, and Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach who served as Director of the National Cancer Institute and is currently the Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Since starting practice in San Mateo County in January 2003, Dr. Hoang has led the effort for minimally-invasive urological surgery. He has several areas of particular interest such as laparoscopic surgery including robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, urological cancer, office-based prostate therapy, urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, and reconstructive surgery of the urinary tract.

His experience of laparoscopic nephrectomy (kidney cancer removal) is among the largest of private-practicing urologists in the county, a product of his service of the county's residents at three major hospitals on the peninsula. He also leads the practice of ablation surgery (cryoablation surgery) for the treatment of smaller kidney tumors as an alternative to higher-risk open surgery, and for prostate cancer as an alternative to radiation therapy. His use of the da Vinci system for robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery now includes radical prostatectomy, total or partial nephrectomy, and reconstructive kidney surgery.

His surgical treatment of urinary incontinence is also minimally-invasive. Procedures by Dr. Hoang are usually performed as outpatient surgery. He is also offering sacral nerve modulation (INTERSTIM THERAPY) as treatment for bladder control difficulties that are not responding to medication treatment.

The treatment of prostate cancer is also an important interest. He believes that surgery remains the gold-standard for the treatment of clinically-localized prostate cancer, especially for relatively younger men with the disease. This effort has been greatly advanced with the addition of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery using the da Vinci system. For appropriate cases, radiation therapy (including brachytherapy) and cryotherapy (cryoablation surgery) are excellent treatment options.

Dr. Hoang accepts consultations for adult and pediatric patients. Currently, he operates at Peninsula Medical Center, Mills Health Center, Sequoia Hospital, and San Mateo Medical Center (previously CHOPE Hospital).

In his personal time, Dr. Hoang spends time with his family enjoying many outdoor activities including cycling, hiking, and skiing. Although he loves living in the Bay Area, he has remained passionate about Texas, especially for the Texas Longhorns and Willie Nelson. He also has had the privilege of volunteering, most recently in his homeland of Viet Nam with organizations of Friendship Bridge and the International Volunteers in Urology.
